How to Keep Your Makeup Organized

Whether you’re a makeup minimalist or have dozens of different products, it’s easy to let your makeup drawer become a bit of a disaster zone.

Just like every other area of your home, there are tools, tips and tricks you can use to keep your cosmetics in order — in turn making them easier for you to find and use. Here are five tips for keeping your makeup organized:

  1. Get Rid of Old Products

Did you know that makeup expires? That’s right, just like food, there’s a limit on how long you should hold onto that favorite tube of mascara or shade of eyeshadow you just like to use every now and then. According to Harper’s Bazaar, lipstick should be thrown out one year after opening while mascara reaches its expiration just three months after opening. By getting rid of your expired products, you eliminate unneeded items in your makeup collection.

  1. Buy Products and Tools in Sets

When you purchase your makeup or other cosmetic products in a set, they often come in a case already. Eyeshadow palettes offer a variety of colors in one package and some lipsticks are double sided with a different color on each end. Another great item to buy as a set is makeup brushes. This vegan and eco-friendly makeup brush set comes with eight brushes in a travel-friendly storage case.

  1. Store Everyday and Special Occasion Makeup Separately

You probably have your everyday look down to a T — and you probably use the same products and tools over and over again each day. Rather than storing all of your makeup together, separate those everyday products and your glam products into two different makeup bags or organizers. That way, you’re not digging through your bright red lipstick and shimmery eyeshadow when you’re just trying to do a natural, everyday look.

  1. Invest in a Quality Organizer

Depending on the size of your makeup collection, there are dozens of options to hold your makeup, and most of them are pretty affordable. This countertop organizer is great if you have lots of bigger, taller products and this organizer with lot of drawers is great for smaller products like these vegan eyeshadow pods.

  1. Buy Samples of New Products

Trying new makeup and cosmetic products is fun! You never know what new product you’ll discover and add to your favorites. But, since you don’t know if you’ll love the product or get it in the correct shade, it’s great to buy samples (like these $3 mineral foundation powder pods) so you don’t have excess full-size products adding to your makeup collection. Buy a sample and either use the whole thing and then order the full-size product or throw it away if you don’t love it. Don’t be a makeup hoarder!
